Penguins, Penguins, Penguins

For those of us who love penguins (and is there anyone who doesn’t?), the penguin season is in full swing. It started, of course, with publication of the beautifully illustrated A Sweater for Duncan by Sea Cliff author Margaret Gay Malone, a gentle story about a young penguin who learns that growing up has its own rewards.

This spring, Jim Carrey starred in Mr. Popper’s Penguins, the movie based on the children’s classic book. The live-action comedy is a family treat. Expected to release soon is Happy Feet 2 in 3D, a sequel to the highly successful animated feature, Happy Feet, that had audiences tapping their feet to the lively dancing bipeds. Also in development is Madagascar 3, another winning animation that will help to give penguin lovers their fill of some of the world’s cutest birds.

Perhaps nothing beats the Real Thing. Both the Bronx Zoo and the Central Park Zoo house penguins. Closer to home, the aquarium in Riverhead has penguins, too.

For those penguin lovers 24-7, mark your calendars for next April 25. That’s World Penguin Day, and your chance to hug a penguin, or at least, run to your local library and learn more about these fascinating creatures.
